Emanuel

by Judy Cheung (USA)

Emanuel, Emanuel, where are you now, Emanuel?

I look for you on street corners and in the news.

In school I couched to soften your haranguing views.

You learned, and practiced, how to damn great wrongs to Hell.

You made our class aware of people and told us how to use

our strength, be proud of all our different hues,

Emanuel, Emanuel, where are you now, Emanuel?

I look for you on street corners and in the news.

Your youthful passion had the power to break the old taboos.

Did loss of adolescence make ideals defuse?

Are you now one who ignores your neighbor without food or shoes?

Or did an indiscretion put you on drugs or in a prison cell?

Emanuel, Emanuel, where are you now, Emanuel?

I look for you on street corners and in the news.
