ODE TO A SPRING MORNING

by Eva Tabaosares Kohr

Dawn tiptoes in the dark, dressed
In pale pastels. As sunlight peeks
She shakes her dew-bespangled vest
Which pearled her vermeil cheeks.
She whispers low and calls around
The sleeping fragrance from the ground.

Each flower in earth’s dark breast
Rose from dreams of its wintry rest.
Morning’s breath wanders here and there.
Like blithe spirit felt everywhere.
None ever trembled with such bliss
As the yellow narcissus.

As sunbeam steals over the living scene,
Seeds sprouted of tenderest green.
Wrens warbled melodious strains
With notes that float over hills and plains.
And feeble feet of new flocks dance.
The world awoke from its wintry trance.

With gaiety every heart sings.
The untaught harmony of spring.
Rise O soul on wings of fire!
With fervor high and sing along.
Strike the lyre. Join nature’s choir
As the skylark leads the song.
