CARPE NOCTUM

by Dr. Ian Hale

(They say)

“The kids today” they say
“The clothes they wear
The lifestyle; those skinny models that look that way”
They say- “It’s the boyfriend-he’s to blame”

“The Rap clubs, yes, now there’s the threat
That music scene and drugs”
Drinks whose names we all forget”
And on and on and on again,
To miss the point completely
In that uniquely obdurate English way

It’s about a glance which went unheeded
The opportunities denied
The calls that weren’t returned
No hugs, no kisses, and the smile that stayed ungiven
That wrecked their child’s soul…

The “come on now, chin up, let’s have no fuss
What will the neighbours say”?
That leaves another angel
Felled and broken in an unmarked grave
