ADVICE TO A POET

by Naoshi Koriyama (JAPAN)

don’t eat too much
of what you want to eat
beware of satisfaction
keep your stomach
always half-filled
for hunger alone will
make you aspire
to reach out for a star

don’t you read too much
beware of others’ words
filling up your heart
feel the warmth
of a baby’s head
with your cheek
and think deep
on the fire of life
alone
and write
by a kerosene stove
