BALANCING ON THE BRINK OF THE PRESENT

By: Judy Hardin Cheung

We balance on the narrow thread
of ages past and the time that is to come.
With one hand we reach
for celestial ascendance.
With the other,
we clutch the past,
uncertain if we want to return,
or simply remain where we are,
afraid that what lies ahead or behind
is not as good as what we have.

One way to guess the future
is to look at our past.
One way to disentangle from the past
is to look to the future.
To do this, we inch forward
on the narrow string of the present,
suspended between inheritance and inevitable change.
With each step forward, we come closer
to what we think we want.

The tightrope is taught.
The distance is far.
I will take the next step
with arms outspread
in case I have to fly.
