SONG TO A FATHER

By: Atty. Rafael Evangelista

I have the words within me.
Is the music ready to play?
I must sing your song before
Early evening turns to gray.

The wind strums the music,
Now I can put my words to song
To proclaim how much I love you.
I have waited for so long.

Dad, those distant strains
Of beautiful melody I hear.
It is your music in the wind,
Whispering gently in my ear.

Let me sing this song for you,
The words I have within me.
The song that the wind is singing,
Is your song that’s meant to be.

These things l learned from you,
Words not too hard to recall:
Respect, integrity, courage …
When I was still very small.

You taught me to be humble,
You taught me to be strong …
And that both go together, even
If sometimes things go wrong.

To give, that was your gift…
And serve all those in need.
It was a lesson you imparted
By thought, word and deed.

I feel you present in my heart,
I am what I am because of you.
And even if we’re now apart,
Your lessons still ring true.

Old worlds begin to fade,
And fathers do grow old.
The wind is singing your song,
Now your story should be told.

The wind sings so gently of
A source of strength and love.
The song, Father, is about you,
Singing blessings from above.

Love you, Dad!
