AS SUBMISSIVE AS WATER

by Alexander Chang

Soon after moonlight had walked off the tropical puce
The morning dews woke up to the melodies of singing birds
The chiefs of the tribe came down with a flag of truce

The same sort of tears dropped at Paddi for a war undeclared
As submissive as water, they offered their lives, their bleeding hearts
In exchange for their wives and children that best be spared

Promising to accede to what the serpents would enquire
They took a sacred path and lay themselves down in the sea of blood
Where peace was defined in accordance with conqueror’s desire
