OVERVIEW & OBJECTIVES

The UPLI GLOBAL POETRY CONTEST is an on-line international poetry competition sponsored by UPLI as an organization together with its individual board members. It is open to all poets around the world.

The aims of the contest are:

  1. To promote the writing and appreciation of poetry globally in various selected forms and languages.
  2. To contribute in fostering the ideals of peace, brotherhood, unity and understanding among the diverse communities of the world.
  3. To honor and establish a lasting legacy for the long-serving individual board members of UPLI.

POETRY CATEGORIES & JUDGING

CONTEST CATEGORIES

There will be a total of nine contest categories (based on poetry forms / themes) as follows:

CATEGORY 1: YUZON LEGACY AWARD (IN HONOR OF THE YUZON PRESIDENTS OF UPLI)

Any Verse Form

Open to any verse form, with the theme “WE ARE ALL ONE”, focusing on any of the following ideas: world peace, brotherhood, unity, understanding, harmony, cooperation, anti-war, anti-terrorism, anti-exploitation of women, children and minorities, extending help to victims of calamities, war refugees, etc. and related concepts.

The poem should be in English, or should have an English translation if originally written in another language. It will be judged in English. The poem should fit one typed page (thirty lines maximum).

CATEGORY 2: THE DR. WANDA RIDER AWARD

Rhymed Verse

Open to any subject, but the poem should promote thought and reflect a positive turn of events that could bring about a positive outcome.

The poem should be in English or have an English translation. It will be judged in English. Maximum thirty lines to fit in one typed page.

CATEGORY 3: THE DR. FAN KUANLING AWARD

Hsinku

The category is for HSINKU, a “new old form” developed in Chinese by illustrious International Poet, Dr. Fan Kuanling. The new “hsinku” has been liberated from the restriction of the traditional form in that the writer may freely use modern language and modes of expression. The short poem has four lines, rhymed abxb. The first three lines set up a situation or scene, and the fourth line gives an unexpected twist or an interesting unique ending.

Poems may be entered in English, Chinese or any other language with an English translation or description. They will be judged in English or Chinese (if this is the original language used).

CATEGORY 4: THE PROF. NORIKO MIZUSAKI AWARD

Haiku

This category is for the HAIKU, a short three-line poem in the Japanese haiku style. In English, it is usually written as a three-line poem, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. Poems may be submitted in English or Japanese with an English translation. Poems will be judged in English or the original Japanese.

CATEGORY 5: THE MARY HALLIBURTON AWARD

Free Verse in English

This category is for FREE VERSE, poems that do not have rhyme or rhythm and no set meter or particular structure. The subject is open and the poems will be judged based on artistic expression. Poems should be submitted in English or with an English translation. They will be judged in English.

Poems must fit one typed page (thirty lines maximum).

CATEGORY 8: THE NATICA ANGILLY AWARD

Dancing Poetry

This category is for DANCING POETRY, poetry that can be perceived as Danceable, uplifting, and outreaching. This poetry form, as conceived by its originator, Ms. Natica Angilly, aims to contribute to the ideal of furthering understanding through the fusion of poetry with dance as a unified art form. Any subject, any form, including free verse – all are all vehicles of Dancing Poetry. The poems should portray motion, music, rhythm and lyricism.

Please limit entries to thirty lines (one typed page) and enter in English or with an English translation. Poems will be judged in English.

CATEGORY 9: THE ALEXANDER FUI SAK CHANG AWARD

Short Free Verse in Chinese or English

This category is for SHORT FREE VERSE, maximum fourteen lines on any subject, any style. Poems may be submitted in Chinese (with an English translation) or in English. They will be judged in Chinese or English. The English versions of the winning entries will be published with the original for wider appreciation.

Please enter haiku, hsinku and other non-English traditional forms in their designated categories of this contest, not in this category.

JUDGING OF ENTRIES

  1. Entries in each category will be judged by the sponsoring UPLI Board Member or a panel of judges he will form and head.
  2. To ensure objectivity in judging, entries in each category, when submitted for judging, will bear no names but will be assigned numbers as the only means of identification by the respective judges.
  3. Entries will be submitted to a central digital address, from which they will be sent out, numbered & names deleted, to the judges of their respective categories.
  4. The decision of the judges will be final and no subsequent protests will be entertained.

AWARDS & PRIZES

 1.
There will be a maximum of ten finalists in each category, from whom three winners will be chosen and the following prizes awarded:

(If there is an insufficient number of entries in any category or if the judges do not deem the entries qualified for specific prizes, they may withhold the awarding of such prizes.)

 2.
All finalists will be awarded certificates of recognition and will be entitled to a free one-year membership in UPLI (if they apply formally and their membership is approved).
 3.
All finalists will have their poems featured in an Anthology planned for publication for the next World Congress of Poets (WCP). Publication of the Anthology will depend on the number of entries received and finalists chosen.
 4.
All finalists and winners will be officially announced in the UPLI website and selected social media, and prizes will be sent in the most expeditious way, depending on the country of residence of the winners.
 5.
Non-UPLI contest participants may apply for membership in UPLI, using the official form in the UPLI website, and subject to the usual rules for screening and approval.

RULES & CONDITIONS

  1. The UPLI GLOBAL POETRY CONTEST is open to all poets around the world, whether UPLI members or not. There is no fee to enter the contest.
  2. A contestant may submit only one poem per category, and may not submit the same poem in two or more categories. (Thus, the contestant may enter several categories, but with a different poem for each category.)
  3. Contestants may submit their entries only through the two ways designated (See HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR POEM/S below).
  4. UPLI will not be responsible for entries not properly sent or not received, but will acknowledge by email reply entries that are received.
  5. While all reasonable steps and safeguards will be taken to ensure the proper receipt, handling and judging of entries, announcement of winners and giving / sending of prizes, UPLI, its officials and representatives, will assume no liability of any kind in case of lapses due to any technical or human error arising from the management and conduct of the contest.
  6. Upon submitting their entries, all contestants automatically give UPLI the right to publish their entered poems in any future publication (printed or digital) of UPLI.
  7. We are announcing that upon the request of poets and poetry groups, the contest will run from August 16, 2014 to February 15, 2015. Unless otherwise announced in advance, entries received after February 15, 2015 will not be accepted. As originally scheduled, finalists and winners will be announced within March 2015, and the prizes will be awarded as soon as possible thereafter.

How to Submit

Choose one of two easy ways to submit your entries. For your convenience, and for more fool-proof submission, the preferred system is A. UPLI Website Submission.

For either option, the first step is to type your poem in WORD DOCUMENT and save it in any folder easily accessible to you. Type the poem as you would like it to appear in final form (use basic fonts).

Please refer to the specific guidelines of the poetry category you wish to join.

  1. Click here to access UPLI Website Submission.
  2. Fill up the Contestant Information fields.
  3. Under Contest Information, select the poetry category you wish to join.
  4. To submit your poem click on the Upload Icon. A FILE UPLOAD window will appear. Locate the file in the folder where you originally saved your poem, and click the OPEN button.
  5. You will receive an email confirming your entry and an ENTRY ID NUMBER for your reference.
  6. Finally, click the SUBMIT MY POEM button.
